Technology’s Changing Our Lives in These Challenging Times

I really don’t know what has become of my beloved Garden City! The alluring and lush greenery has been rudely replaced by towering cement blocks or shimmering glass covered buildings. While the gardens and parks have made way for some unplanned apartments blocks that are meant to house the teeming millions who throng to this once pensioner’s paradise for work. That aside, the lakes and ponds have all dried up too, and have been replaced by arid waste land, or any number of the previously mentioned concrete monstrosities. It was all terribly regrettable and so disappointing!

Furthermore, the cool and enlivening climate has died quite an unnatural death too! Gone are the pleasant summers, the timely and rejuvenating monsoon season, or even the cool and invigorating winters. Now, more than ever, the city seems to be moving towards one homogenous season, with some minuscule variations that range from simply being hot, hotter or hottest. To make matters worse, the traffic and infrastructure scene is an absolute nightmare in Bangalore City too. While the pollution, dust and smoke only seeks to exacerbate the problem. I blame planning or the lack thereof for this most terrible situation, and try as we might, I fear this just may be irredeemable, given the present circumstances. If I were you, I’d brace myself, for things are likely to get worse, fast. So much so, I dread stepping out of the house at any time of the day or night.

On a more optimistic note, it’s great that our lifestyles have been blessed by some truly wonderful technology! This technology touches our lives every day and makes a huge difference. In much the same vein, thanks to the absolute wonders of the internet, you don’t have to go through the rigmarole of going to the office every day, when you can simply get your work done at home. Moreover, you can even store your work on one of the latest pen drives at the office, only to come home and continue working! Now, thanks to something as little as a pen drive, I for one don’t need to show up at the office every single work day!

This brings me nicely to the next point I’d like to make – shopping online. Now, thanks to the many e-commerce sites, shopping is a breeze, and doesn’t involve having to go out of the house just to buy something in that terrible heat, dust and pollution. Now, you can simply order anything from stationery and office supplies, to groceries, clothes, fashion accessories, technology, as well as gadgets such as gaming consoles, computers, laptops, phones, tablets and even pen drives online. In fact, that’s exactly how I procured the latest pen drive for myself! Besides, now that my son is bugging me for one of the latest pen drives too, I’m sure as heck going to order one for him from one of these e-retailers as well.

That aside, the internet also allows us to pay our phone bills, our ISP bills and so many other things online, giving us another reason to never leave the comfort of our home ever again. Besides this, most banking things can be done online as well, and I frequently use it to transfer funds from the comfort of my favourite armchair at home. To top it all off, given the fact that we have all the entertainment we need right at our fingertips, we never have to rush off to the cinema to watch the latest movies! Now, isn’t the internet really something?

In conclusion, let’s never shy away from using the force at our disposal to overcome these tough and dark days, and thank the internet for the abundant blessings it bestows!

Top 5 Project Management Trends for 2015-16

Project management is a critical core activity for most organizations who want to maintain their competitive edge so they can’t afford to have not fit purpose management process or worse projects failing to deliver business benefits. The value of project management is increasingly recognized in both the private and public sectors, so what are the emerging global trends crucial to project delivery? Let’s check out the emerging project management trends for 2016 and beyond.

Agile prominent: Agile will continue to gain popularity in IT projects in coming years. Several small and large enterprises are bringing Agile project management practices into their business. Organizations will find a way to make Agile work for them by becoming more purposeful in how they choose to adopt it. Organizations with Agile testing methodology can more easily adapt their project portfolios due to changing business priorities and it will help organizations to stay competitive by discovering trouble spots.

Business analysis as design work: A trend that will continue into 2015 is the notion that business analysis work involves design. Organizations who start providing ‘logical’ or ‘conceptual’ design output as part of building apps and business processes will flourish faster. Organizations can benefit through less rework by using standard models such as business process maps, use case models, prototypes and wireframes, sequence diagrams etc.

Risk management will be popular: Today’s business world is fraught with new risks and complex regulations. S If you don’t truly embed risk management in your project, you cannot reap the full benefits of this approach. Identify the risks in the early stages, communicate and analysis of risks should be carried out. Risk management will be a major factor for project professionals to stay competitive.

More Mobile Apps: Mobile apps are increasingly gaining more parity with browser-based applications. Businesses are empowering their employees to use mobile devices with enhanced information services that enable them to make better decisions despite location. Make sure project management software and collaboration tools are optimized for mobile integration.

Project management software APIs become more important: Application Programming Interfaces (API) will become a requirement among prospective PM software purchasers. Project management and customer relationship management (CRM) platform integration can bridge the chasm between sales and development/engineering by exchanging data between these two key business systems. The API can successfully provide transparency between two systems.

It is going to be dazzling year in the project management field. So just follow the trends and be adapted to new and changing workplace situations.

Can We Live Without Technology?

No, we cannot live without technology. Technology is something that in today’s time is necessary for quality of life. No music, no internet, no video games, no TV, no fun, no social life, there is absolutely no life without technology. In this fast paced world technology is needed for even the simplest things, be it an alarm clock or a coffee maker. It is growing at a lightening speed and making it hard for people to keep up with it.

With laptops, personal computers, cell phones, handheld tools people have more than needed resources but are unable to use these wisely. Each one of us uses technology in some ways or the other to make life easier which is the reason it has come a long way, with tremendous developments in each field, be it the internet or mobile phones.

We all use technology in some ways or the other. The real question is that are we using the latest development and advancements in technology to the best? The entire world depends on technology as it bought great things such as cars, medicines, microwaves, etc. and each day there is the new development. Telephones and laptops or more likely iPads are used to carry out routine tasks. If these are taken away, then people feel that their life is seized. One can say technology has its side effects and has made us lazy, impatient and dependent. It is the sole reason that the entire world is functioning normally.

If we see the positive side then due to technology, we can carry out complex surgeries, we have apps in our mobile phone that enable us to track our health, finances, etc. Technology has made it possible for a person with a disability to walk or run in a marathon; it is the reason that has helped an individual with a disability to communicate with the rest of the world. It is because of technology that we can talk to our friends and relatives in distant places.

Businesses use both the internet and mobile apps to reach to a wider audience to expand their array of services and without technology, it is not possible. Technology is neither good nor bad, at this point it is not possible to live without technology, but yes, we can find ways to use it wisely and not entirely depend on it. Eventually, in the end, we have come to the conclusion that we are not entirely dependent on technology, yet we rely on it for most of the things in our daily life.

6 Things to Know Before Buying a Hoverboard

When buying a self-balancing scooter, commonly known as a Hoverboard, it is easy to get overwhelmed with the many options, vendors, and brands on the market. Not all hoverboards are equal. Just because they look similar on the outside, doesn’t mean they are the same on the inside. Hoverboards can be awesomely different when it comes to the components “under-the-hood.” There are many options to choose from, and special considerations for each. So how do you know if you are getting a deal or getting robbed?

1: Find a Specialist. First and most importantly, hedge your bet by buying from a reputable vendor. When you buy from Amazon, eBay, or Craigslist, you might get a quality product, or you might not. These companies just provide a way for individuals to sell their products to large audiences, so it can be a risky purchase, depending on the nature of the seller. Even if the listing specifies all of the best components, you are relying on the seller’s honesty to get a quality product. In these cases, we strongly recommend you remove the cover upon receipt and at a minimum, inspect the battery. It should have a sticker on it that states the cell-brand and the country of manufacture. If you discover a discrepancy, you may be limited in your ability to get a compensation or replacement from the vendor, as you will be working through a third party and have to deal with the red-tape associated with that. If you buy directly from a store that specializes in hoverboards, however, there is much more accountability, and you can contact the seller directly if there is a problem. As an added bonus, without all those listing fees, the prices are often lower at independent stores as well.

2: Find out about the Return Policy. A company with solid products will be proud of it, and offer a beefy return policy. 30 days is standard. Any less than that, and buyer beware – you may be at risk of buying a lemon.

3: Get a Good Battery. Require that your hoverboard contains a Samsung or LG battery. The battery is the heart of a hoverboard, and more-so than any other option, you need to make sure you are getting a good one. Lithium Ion batteries are very powerful, and more volatile than other kinds of rechargeable batteries. They do not charge well in extreme heat or cold, and when discharged too much, or overcharged, they can get hot and catch on fire. Samsung has been in the battery and consumer electronics business for decades, and they make a good hoverboard battery with proper circuitry to cut off charging at the proper time and ensure an even charge across all cells. LG batteries are similar in this regard. They are safer batteries, and will stand up to more charge cycles than a generic battery made by a factory that doesn’t have the same quality control guidelines.

4: Wheel size matters. If you use your hoverboard mostly indoors, any of them will suffice, but if you are outdoors, think about how many cracks or bumps you will encounter. The 6.5 inch hub will handle up to quarter inch bumps pretty well, but if they are frequent or larger than that, the larger 8 inch wheels help. If you are using your hoverboard to go larger distances, a 10 inch hub will be even more comfortable yet. So this decision becomes a balance between comfort and portability. For most users, we think the 8 inch wheels are just about perfect.

5: Consider your replacement parts. If something breaks, it helps to have a company with factory connections, that can talk to the engineers to help you troubleshoot the problem. Once the problem is diagnosed, you will probably need replacement parts. If you work with a company that can provide them, you will not have not wasted all of your money on a lemon that can’t be repaired.

6: Know the motor wattage. Typically, the smaller the hoverboard wheel, the smaller the motor inside. This does not affect performance, speed, weight limit, or longevity; it is simply that you want it to be paired properly, or you may have too much or too little torque for your wheels, making it harder to ride. We find that for a responsive, yet easy to control ride, 500 total watts is a good target for the 6.5 inch wheel, 600 is good for the 8 inch, and 700 is ideal for the 10 inch. Divide these numbers by two to get the ideal wattage per wheel. If the seller doesn’t know the answers to these questions, you might want to shop around a bit.

That’s about it! Consider the store’s reputation, their return policy, the battery type, the wheel size, whether or not they have replacement parts, and the hoverboard’s wattage. These 6 considerations will help you buy a high quality hoverboard that provides many years of enjoyment and convenience. Happy hoverboarding!

ABS or PLA: Which 3D Printing Filament Should You Use?

Both ABS and PLA are thermoplastics. Thermoplastics become malleable when superheated, thus allowing you to mould them into different shapes prior to cooling. 3D printing uses both PLA and ABS filament via similar processes, but they differ in as much as some printers will only utilise ABS or PLA.

Unlike inkjet and laser printers which use printer ink cartridges and toner cartridges to dispense a print medium. 3D Printers use thermoplastics which are dispensed from a reel through a heated nozzle to form a 3D printed object. This plastic is called filament.

ABS Filament

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, or ABS, is an oil-based plastic. Used for constructing things such as car parts, musical instruments, and Lego building blocks it is a strong, sturdy material. With a high melting point, ABS filament can warp if it is allowed to cool while printing. Therefore ABS prints should be carried out on a heated surface, which many home use printers do not have. ABS also gives off fumes when in use requiring adequate ventilation.

Examples of 3D Printers that use ABS filament are the Colido 2 0 High Resolution FDM 3D Printer and the Ultimaker 2 Go High Resolution FFF 3D Printer both printers can use ABS and PLA Filament.

PLA Filament

Made from organic material, cornstarch and sugarcane, Poly Lactic Acid, PLA, is both easier and safer to use than ABS. PLA gives a smoother and shinier appearance that’s more aesthetically pleasing on the eye, it also has a slightly sweet odour when heated opposed to the harsh smell often associated with ABS. But, whilst PLA filament might seem like a better overall choice at first glance, it has a far lower melting point than ABS. Printed parts made from PLA that are intended for use in mechanical operations, or parts that are stored in high temperatures can become warped cracked or even melt. Although weaker than ABS, PLA can achieve a superior level of print detail and is less prone to errors while printing.

Examples of 3D Printers that use PLA filament are the Colido Compact 3D Printer High Resolution FDM 3D Printer and the Da Vinci 1 1 Plus 3D Printer Wi-Fi, Standalone 3D Printer which use both ABS and PLA Filament.

To summarise

ABS filament will give your printed objects better structural integrity and will be more suited to mechanical use, but it also requires specific types of printers and printing surfaces such as a heated bed.

PLA filament gives you more precise prints with a better aesthetic quality, as well as more flexibility with printing conditions. Simply put, PLA is for hobbyist 3D printers while ABS filament is more suited to commercial grade products that need to endure more rigorous wear and tear.

Estate Planning For Your Computer: 10 Key Concepts To Guide You Thru the Process

Many people prefer “black and white” answers to their questions. When preparing for someone’s digital afterlife, however, it’s just not that easy. The following 10 concepts are meant to get you thinking about estate planning for your computer, as well as providing you with suggestions on how to get started.

1. What’s Mine is Mine and What’s Yours Is Mine

With computer software and the Internet, we’ve entered the world of esoteric assets and non- traditional property. Digital information is reclassifying terms such as “mine” and “property.” Often times when opening an on-line account or downloading software, you don’t own the actual content. Rather, you’re receiving the right to access that content (called a limited license).

That license is granted to you-and generally you and no one else-when you click “I agree” to the service provider’s contract. It’s that lengthy legalese in tiny text that pops up on our screens whenever we open a new on-line account.

Example: Over the years, an individual spends $10,000 building an extensive iTunes collection. He doesn’t own the songs like a traditional record, cassette or CD, but he (and he alone) has the right to listen to those songs. When he dies, what happens to that collection? He never “owned” it to begin with; therefore, “it” (which is really just access to the songs) can’t be sold or transferred.

2. Clash of the Titans

In the growing debate between the dissemination of information (end users freely sharing their access) and wanting to keep it private (companies determined to protect their assets and safeguard their customers), no-one has yet come up with an easy solution to this complicated issue. Sans a King Solomon, “no-one” in this case means federal and state legislation. Currently there are few states with appropriate legislation, so that leaves the federal government.

3. Federal Anti-Piracy Laws – A Good Idea to Know They Exist

Ever share passwords with family, friends and colleagues? What about business partners or the executor of your will? Then you (along with millions of others) may be violating the terms of your on-line agreement (the contract mentioned earlier), and some federal anti-piracy laws (the only thing we’ve got right now pertaining to digital data).

4. Back to the Future

It has been said that two thousand years ago, civilization’s knowledge base was doubling about every one thousand years. Today we’re doubling that base every 2 weeks. With the law generally 2-1/2 steps behind society, imagine the catching up it has to do with digital information. Until test cases are heard and more and different laws are passed, what’s a person to do?

5. You’ve Taken the First Step

Feel good about that. Just reading articles such as this and mulling over the concepts is to become aware. Knowing is one-half the battle.

6. What Next? It Doesn’t Include Obsessing.

No need to obsess about protecting your digital data. No need to make hard copy back-ups of everything. Instead, when you next have a bit of free time, take stock of your accounts and, along with their passwords, list them somewhere safe (there are apps for this, by the way).

7. The Catch-22 That Will Be Straightened Out Someday

Notwithstanding the potential violation of anti-piracy laws, it would be a good idea to give someone that list. (The caveat in the previous sentence is a good indicator of the conundrum we’re facing.) Monitor your data and, as accounts are added and deleted and as passwords are changed and new ones are acquired, revise your list and give the update to the appropriate person(s).

8. When They Die, We Delete

Nope, not that simple. Considering social media alone, every platform has its own terms dealing with the death of an account holder. Rarely are those terms as simple as deletion upon 6 months of inactivity.

Wikipedia maintains a page entitled “Death and the Internet” where they list the terms of service that certain providers follow when it comes to sharing information and dormant accounts. It’s worth noting which of these providers you may use and then take stock of the applicable policy. One thing that’s immediately apparent is that there is no such thing as an industry standard.

9. Power to Manage Digital Media

Yes, there is such a thing. In fact, law firms are beginning to include Power to Manage Digital Media in their clients’ trusts and durable powers of attorney. While this will not solve every problem, it is certainly a step in the right direction.

10. “Do The Best You Can”

That’s one attorney’s answer to people’s general query about their digital data. “Sometimes they’re frustrated with that answer,” he added. In this rapidly-evolving Information Age, it’s understandable that some people might feel that way. Yet, “do your best” is his reassurance that, instead of fretting ceaselessly about digital data, time could be better spent overseeing on-line accounts. Use the steps below to do just that:

a. prepare and maintain a list of your accounts and passwords,

b. continue to let people know how to get that information (while keeping the anti-piracy laws in the back of your mind),

c. consider how you’d eventually like your digital life handled, and

d. when creating or revising your will and estate documents, add the digital data into your asset category.

3 Keys to Effective Real-Time Data Visualization

Everybody appreciates the value of a good picture. Each one says a thousand words, after all, or so the saying goes. If we really dig in to this metaphor, we’d probably admit that some pictures say substantially more than that – while others probably come in well under a dozen (just look at a random Facebook wall for some examples).

Ours has become a very visual culture, and one occupying a place in time defined by an overwhelming abundance of information all around us. Considering these two facts, it is not at all surprising that we see such an increased interest in data visualization – that is to say the process of placing a particular, specific set of data points in a highly visual context that allows it to be quickly consumed and analyzed.

It’s not a new concept; data has been visualized in pictures for centuries. A map is a type of data visualization, for instance, as are the many charts and graphs that have been used since the end of the 18th Century. What is new is the massive quantity of data available to nearly everyone, and the wide array of tools that can be used to create compelling visualizations. Think about the cool infographic you saw the other day. Was it created painstakingly over several days of carefully reviewing ethnographic data compiled by a dogged scientist over the course of his career? Maybe, but probably not. It was more likely created by some marketing department somewhere (not that there’s anything wrong with that) using somebody else’s data and somebody else’s visualization tools.

The purpose of this post, though, is not to discuss the merits of data visualization in general, but rather the specific subset of data visualization that deals with real-time data. This is a completely separate species of data visualization and should be treated as such.

Real-time data visualization refers to visualization of data that is continuously updated as new data is generated by connected devices or people. This is the type of data that is used to make real-time decisions and, when done correctly, can truly transform business processes.

There are a number of important factors to consider when attempting to visualize data in real time, but we will focus on three simple and obvious keys: clarity, consistency, and feedback.

Real-Time graphics should emphasize pertinent information and use design principles that promote ease-of-use and accessibility above aesthetics. Things like size, color and brightness can be used to distinguish primary details from secondary and tertiary details. Special graphics can be created to emphasize different information under different conditions (i.e. a special set of graphics to be used when a certain alarm is triggered).

Clear visualizations provide actionable information at a glance, and clearly show the current process state and conditions. Alarms and indicators of abnormal conditions are prominent and impossible to ignore.

Clarity encompasses both content and context.

Consistent visualizations are standardized and consistently formatted. Interaction requires a minimum of keystrokes or pointer manipulations.

Shapes, colors, and layouts should be used consistently through all screens. If the color red is used in one place to designate an abnormally high value on one screen, that same color red should be used to indicate all abnormally high values of the same type on all screens. If navigation buttons are on the left side of one screen, they should be on the left side of all screens. A consistent visualization system is arranged in a logical, hierarchical manner, allowing operators to visualize both a general overview of the system as well as more detailed information on different components as needed. Navigation and interaction of any type should be as easy and intuitive as possible.

Consistency is closely related to clarity.

An operator should be fully confident that the choices they make are having the desired effect. Screens should be designed in a way that provides information, putting relevant data in the proper context. Also, important actions that carry significant consequences should have confirmation mechanisms to ensure that they are not activated inadvertently.

Controls will function consistently in all situations. If something is not working as it should, that fact should be immediately obvious and undeniable. In a well-designed system, design principles are employed to reduce user fatigue.

Stepping Into The World Of 3D Printing May Be Your Smartest Move Yet

Ever considered starting your own 3D printing online business? Well maybe it’s time you did. This exciting new trend in advanced technology is quickly taking the world by storm and the more popular it becomes the more the demand for it will increase. Not surprisingly, with that demand comes a world of possibilities for talented IT professionals to make their mark.

Truly, the possibilities that 3D printing brings with it are nothing short of amazing. Of course they are also quite challenging, as the 3D printing process can be very intricate and complicated and may require specialized skill. Not a bonus for eager business owners who want to put it to use for themselves but a distinct advantage for IT professionals like yourself who have the know-how to help them use the specialized software, designs and equipment involved.

There are different types of 3D printing online-business-entities that you could start. The most obvious is one where you create and market your own 3D designs. This is particularly exciting for those who combine their flair for technology with a flair for the creative. It involves mastering CAD and using different types of software to create unique products that you can then direct market to your audience. The limits for this kind of business are bound only by your own imagination and ability.

If you don’t want to go this route, you can still offer your services to businesses that may have ideas of their own but lack the knowledge, equipment or time necessary to bring them to reality. By helping them to create their own pieces without spending a fortune, you can give them the ability to retain control of their own designs while putting your own technological skill to use without having to actually create the designs yourself.

Of course either of these first two options assumes that you have access to the often extremely pricey equipment necessary for 3D printing. If this is not true in your case, you can still establish a 3D printing online business by setting yourself up as the middleman between businesses with designs and individuals with the ability to do the actual printing.

In this way, you can use your own knowledge of the technology involved in 3D printing to consult with companies on their design ideas, help them produce workable designs if they don’t’ have them already, and pair them up with someone who can then turn those designs into reality. This kind of service could be attractive to businesses that don’t have the time to spend on it themselves or the technological expertise that would allow them to identify the right printer to work with.

What makes the whole concept of 3D printing so enticing is the ability to bring your design ideas to life while maintaining control over the entire manufacturing process, something that hasn’t been a reality for businesses up to now. With this new technology, that possibility is now becoming a certainty and with your IT training, you could be an important player in this bold new world.

When you’re looking to find your niche in the IT world, don’t forget about the possibility of having your own 3D printing online business. It could be just what you were looking for and could open up all sorts of exciting opportunities for you!
